Milton Glaser used to say that there are three possible answers to a design problem: “yes, no and wow!” Obviously, wow is the goal. Solving the graphic image for one of the most important festive events in a town is a challenge that exposes us to the opinion of an entire community, with all its complexity, richness and diversity. It is not surprising that, in this case, the first to say “wow” is the graphic designer when he receives the commission. Following the example of Geppetto, that character by Carlo Collodi who knew how to find the soul of a piece of wood, giving life to giants and bigheads seemed like an idea that could be pursued, but I did not want to make the typical poster full of characters and, therefore, visual noise. In fact, I did not find it interesting that the entire communication campaign revolved around a single static image and, contrary to what was intended, lifeless. For this reason I did not make one poster, but ten. I wanted to emphasize the popular nature of the festival with a style that recalls the old woodcuts used in the past to publish the most humble graphic communications. The bright and saturated colors are intended not only to transmit vitality and energy, but also to facilitate chromatic coherence between the different communications.
